Less resource.
More scrutiny.

Infrastructure & Resource Efficiency examines how AI infrastructure could use less electricity, cooling water and material, and what stands between a promising approach and practical adoption.

The research question

What could change?
What would it take?

A technology can promise resource savings without delivering them in every setting. This planned research will examine the evidence, operating conditions, trade-offs and barriers to adoption. Cost is a question to investigate, not a presumed explanation.

This area has no published technology assessments yet. The structure below describes the intended research approach.

Proposed lines of inquiry

Follow the
physical systems.

Computing & workloads
How might equipment and workload-management choices change electricity demand, performance and equipment lifetimes?
Cooling & water
How might cooling choices change electricity and water use under different climates and operating conditions?
Power & grid interaction
How might power-delivery and scheduling choices affect resource use, reliability and the timing of demand?
Materials & infrastructure life
How might retrofit, replacement and reuse decisions affect the resources needed across an infrastructure system’s life?
A consistent evidence standard

Beyond the
headline saving.

Each future assessment would address the same questions:

  1. What changes? Define the technology, operating setting and resource being considered.
  2. Compared with what? Name the baseline, measurement boundary and conditions behind any reported saving.
  3. What evidence exists? Distinguish a vendor claim, model, experiment and independent operational evidence.
  4. Where is it used? Establish whether it is experimental, commercially available or deployed.
  5. What limits adoption? Examine cost, reliability, retrofit constraints, performance and location where evidence supports them.
  6. What remains unknown? Record trade-offs, uncertainty and missing evidence.
